Unai Emery’s first season as Arsenal’s boss didn’t quite go according to plan as the Gunners failed in their quest for a Champions League place in the forthcoming season.
A top-four spot was the main target at the start of the 2018/19 Premier League season but Arsenal did little to convince their fans of their ambitions losing the third and fourth positions to London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham respectively following a run of 4 defeats in their last 7 games.
The Gunners could have also secured a place in next season’s Champions League draw via the Europa League but Emery’s men stumbled at the last hurdle, losing 4 -1 to Chelsea at the Europa League final in Baku Azerbaijan.
The Gunners error-prone backline was particularly to blame for most of their defeats last season but if not for their forwards, the season could have been even worse. Attacking duo of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette were on a different wavelength compared to their teammates as they were responsible for 50 of the 121 goals scored by Arsenal during the course of the 2018/19 season.
Aubameyang(who emerged joint top scorer in the EPL with 22goals) registered 31 goals in all competitions while Lacazette scored 19, the quartet of Alex Iwobi, Aaron Ramsey, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Mesut Ozil scored 6 each while England forward Danny Welbeck scored 4 goals in his last season at the club.
