Manchester United produced a miracle of some sorts as they delivered a 3 – 1 win away in Paris to comeback from a 2 – 0 first leg defeat thereby progressing to the quarterfinals stage on away goals.
No side had ever progressed in the knockout stage of the Champions League after conceding a first leg home defeat by two or more goals, but Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s men did just that on Wednesday night in France.
There have been talks of the Norwegian getting the job permanently as the Red Devils have turned a corner and have been at the positive end of some good results since Solksjaer took over from Mourinho, but this win tops the lot and should certainly see him get the job on a permanent basis.
PSG would have felt they had done the job in the first leg with the second leg nothing but a mere formality, but they were in for a shocker. And the signs showed early on as United went ahead in the second minute when Lukaku got on the end of a loose pass from Thilo Kehrer and rounded Gianluigi Buffon to slot into an empty net from a tight angle.
The home side made amends 10 minutes later, Juan Bernat side-footing past David De Gea after Kylian Mbappe did well to play the ball across goal to find him.
The French side took control of proceedings from then on as they looked to see the game through but Buffon seemed to have other ideas. In the 30th minute, Marcus Rashford fired a goal bound shot which should have drawn an easy save from Buffon, but the ex-Juventus goalkeeper parried it to the feet of Lukaku who accepted the gift with thanks by scoring his and United’s second for the night.
PSG came out for the second half with clear intentions of coming back into the match and they should have, but Mbappe slipped when his chance came while Bernat could only find the upright when he should have doubled his effort.
The match was set for a dramatic end as United were awarded a penalty after Presnel Kimpembe was adjudged to have handled Diogo Dalot’s shot in the box, after an endless wait consulting the VAR which confirmed the referee’s decision Rashford stepped up to fire past Buffon from the spot and send United into the quarterfinals.
