First half headed goals by Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba was all that was needed to decide the heavyweight FA Cup clash between Manchester United and Chelsea as the Blues were knocked out of the tournament.
After losing to a Neymar-less PSG in the Champions League, United bounced back in style against Chelsea despite the injury-enforced absences of Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.
Chelsea started the better of the two sides, United keeper for the night Sergio Romero was called into action early on, diving expertly towards his left to save David Luiz’s free kick and reacting swiftly to deny Pedro from volleying in the rebound.
The Red Devils had chances of their own, Herrera and Marcus Rashford forcing Kepa Arrizabalaga into great saves with the game evenly poised.
In the 31st minute United took the lead, Herrera arrived into the box to meet a Pogba cross heading low into the net with Kepa left astonished.
Ole Gunnar Solkjaer’s team increased their lead just before half-time as Pogba released Rashford on the right flank and then rose in between two Chelsea defenders to head past Kepa from the Striker’s cross
Chelsea came out much more determined after the interval though United’s defence showed they were more than capable to defend any attack the hosts threw at them, with Chris Smalling in particular twice blocking efforts from Gonzalo Higuain.
Chelsea kept giving all they got but were unable to find a way back into the match as United went home two nil winners and booked a quarterfinal tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the process.
