Asensio Wins It Late For Madrid As VAR Makes Controversial Call (Video Highlights)

Marco Asensio scored a late winner to give Real Madrid the advantage going into the second leg with VAR making a controversial call earlier on. Nicolas Tagliafico thought he had given Ajax the lead when he nodded into the net but the goal was ruled out after the VAR review.

The home team started the stronger of the two sides with former Southampton forward Dusan Tadic getting the first chance on goal as his curved shot was parried away by the upright.

Moroccan forward Hakim Ziyech also had a chance on goal but Thibaut Courtois was quick off the line to save.

Courtois wasn’t so prolific when he fumbled to save Matthijs De Ligt’s header allowing Tagliafico to head in the rebound. His face was however saved by the Video Assistant Referee which ruled out the goal as Tadic was apparently blocking the Belgian as the ball was going in.

David Neres spurned a presentable chance when he found himself one-on-one with Courtois while Benzema forced Andre Onana to a save at the other end.

Deep into second half, Real took the lead. Vinicius Junior raced to meet a Sergio Reguilon lobbed pass, found his way into the box and teed up Benzema to fire into the top corner of the net.

Ajax Amsterdam restored parity through Ziyech who directed a Neres cross past Courtois, this gave them hopes of going into the second leg with a fighting chance

But those hopes were dashed late on, with three minutes remaining, substitute Marco Asensio won the match for the defending champions. The Spanish youngster tapped into an empty net after some fine play by Dani Carvajal.
